Rock On The Range Review – Josh Fields

Rock on the Range 2015

If you’ve never been to Rock on the Range before, I can sum it all up in just two words: Absolute Mayhem. It’s the biggest annual hard rock and metal festival in the United States, showcasing the biggest names in rock, and boasting an annual attendance of over 100,000. This year was no exception. The annual festival recently expanded to three full days, covering the weekend of May 15-17 at the newly named Mapfre Stadium in Columbus, OH, home of MLS’s Columbus Crew SC. The lineup this year was headlined Metal heavyweights Slipknot, Heavy Metal titans Judas Priest, and Linkin Park.

Friday May 15th was the anticipated kickoff to the annual festival. The buzz was building to a frenzy as the crowd filed in as the gated opened. Rock on the Range offers a little bit of everything for your musical tastes, as exhibited by the simultaneous performances of Hatebreed and Hip-Hop artist Yelawolf. The must-see band of the day was the returning Breaking Benjamin, returning to Rock on the Range for the first time since the debut of the festival in 2006. Breaking Benjamin did not disappoint, bringing the crowd off their feet playing hits that have kept them on top of the Rock charts for over a decade, including “So Cold”, “Diary of Jane”, and “I Will Not Bow.” Other highlights include Slash with Myles Kennedy performing “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, and Slipknot showing why they are the biggest band in heavy music today, ripping through a blazing hour-plus of hits throughout their career, including songs from their recent smash album “.5: The Grey Chapter.”

Saturday May 16th saw the party keep on going with another day of great music. The fans weren’t about to let a little heavy rain damper their spirits, as the ponchos were out in full force. Saturday also featured the surprise debut of Saint Asonia, featuring Adam Gontier (Former singer of Three Days Grace) and Mike Mushok (Guitarist from Staind). Saint Asonia is a band to watch out for in the coming months, as their debut album will drop and the band will embark on a nation-wide tour. Highlights from Saturday also include Nonpoint (One of the hardest working, most underrated bands out today), Tremonti (Featuring Mark Tremonti of Alter Bridge & Creed fame), BabyMetal (from Japan. Look them up on YouTube, if you haven’t already), In Flames, Ministry, Godsmack, Judas Priest, and Papa Roach. If you have never had the privilege of seeing a Papa Roach show, I cannot recommend seeing them highly enough. Jacoby Shaddix is one of the most charismatic and entertaining frontmen in all of rock, keeping the crowd hyped as they played hit after enormous hit.

Sunday May 17th was the third and final day for Rock on the Range. This is the day that tests your endurance. Rock on the Range pulls no punches, as they had another stellar day of music ahead for the fans. Despite an early hitch to the schedule (a lightning delay pushed back the set times for the side stages 20 minutes), the day went smoothly. Highlights from the day include Hollywood Undead, The Pretty Reckless, Otherwise, Upon a Burning Body, Periphery, Halestorm, Volbeat, Rise Against, and of course Linkin Park.

Overall, Rock on the Range proves, once again, that it is the premiere hard rock festival in the US. Rock on the Range really does have a little bit of everything if you love Rock and Roll. The staff does a fantastic job of keeping everyone safe. The set times for the band flowed smoothly and on time. The food is reasonably priced (by festival standards at least). If you have not yet ventured to Columbus to see this festival, what are you waiting for?

Seether Review by Billy Tomlin

seether 1Just returned from seeing Seether for the 3rd time at the legendary venue, Bogart’s (Cincinnati, Ohio). I have to say that I will never get tired of seeing them live.
Another sold out show…(tips hat).

There is nothing like the feeling you get when the lights go dim, the crowd starts to get quiet, and you hear the opening riff to “Gasoline”. Adrenaline pumps, the crowd
sings every word of every song. Seether is a familiar band….one that will make your day better no matter how many times you see them.

Shaun’s vocals were stellar. John Humphrey had a killer drum solo as well. Song after song of non stop singing from the crowd, led to “Broken”, then the night ended
with “Remedy”…..the crowd favorite, as well as my own. This was the 3rd visit with the band, and I can guarantee you, it won’t be the last.

If you haven’t seen Seether live, do yourself a favor and get to a show.

5/5 Horns up!

Operator Release Music New Video for “Ruin”

The post-hardcore band Operator delivers an unforgiving wave of thrash in their new single “Ruin”. Shot entirely in black and white, the video makes use of creative, tightly framed camera angles. The group is currently offering the track as a free download for a limited time via their BandCamp page.

Stylistically, this song is a step closer to what we originally imagined the band to sound like,” says vocalist Chris Constanza. “It’s taken some time to actually flesh out our sound, despite having a distinct vision for it back when we started. I hope our progression is evident in this music and continues to be apparent for our future releases.

Upcoming Tour Dates:

May 7 – Valdosta, GA @ Ashley Street Station

May 8 – St. George Island, FL @ JBG Rockfest (Day 1)

May 9 – St. George Island, FL @ JBG Rockfest (Day 2)

Operator is a five piece post-hardcore/metal outfit hailing from Tampa Bay, Florida. Originally formed in 2013, Operator released their debut album entitled ‘Dead Ends’ before undergoing a fairly drastic lineup change. After taking eight months for reformation, Operator regrouped with the current lineup, and released their sophomore release ‘Admission,’ in late 2014, to copious amounts of positive feedback.

With 2015’s performance development well underway, the band has scheduled tours throughout the summer as well as plans for the remainder of the year. Operator continues to execute live presentation with as much (or more) raw energy and emotion than what is illustrated in their music.

Operator will be showcasing their transitioned musical direction via the release of three independent singles, prior to the release of their third album in late 2015. On March 3, 2015, Operator released the first of the three singles entitled ‘Poison,’ again receiving immense positive feedback. On May 5, 2015, Operator released the second single entitled ‘Ruin.’ The release date of the third and final single is still to be announced.

Catch Operator at one of their upcoming shows, and make sure to stay connected with the band through social media outlets!

Devour The Day Signs to Razor & Tie

Recording New Album For 2015 Release
Band To Tour With Three Days Grace This Summer
Razor & Tie announces the addition of hard rockers Devour The Day to its worldwide label roster. The band is currently in the studio working on their new album with producer Dan Korneff (Paramore, Lamb of God, My Chemical Romance, Papa Roach).  The music will be released later this year.
The band continues to have a stronghold at rock radio with their current single “Faith” just cracking the Top 20 at Active Rock this week and #23 at Mainstream Rock.  Listen to “Faith” here:
Devour The Day will tour this summer with Three Days Grace starting June 21st through July 30th (tour dates below).
Watch the band’s signing video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iY89g2z4fO0
Joey Chicago and Blake Allison of Devour The Day comment, “Everyone in the Devour the Day family is so elated at the opportunity to join the Razor & Tie roster. We are thrilled to have the chance to move forward with an exceptional team behind us. We feel Razor & Tie will do their best to support us as a functioning and successful business, but more importantly as artists. This relationship allows us to continue to be as honest creatively as we have always been, but also takes it a step further in our hope to reach and influence as many people worldwide with our music.”
Formed in 2012, Devour the Day was born from the brain trust of Joey Chicago (Bass, Vocals, Songwriter) and Blake Allison (Lead Vocals, Guitar, Songwriter, Producer).  After success with the band Egypt Central, Blake and Joey sought to break out on their own, writing and producing music without compromise. Devour The Day self-released their debut album, Time & Pressure, in 2014 and has sold over 20,000 units to date.  The band is a mainstay at rock radio with several songs charting in the Top 25 at Active Rock, including the single “Good Man,” which hit the Top 10 and sold over 100,000 singles.  The band has toured with In This Moment, Hellyeah, Sevendust, Three Days Grace, Butcher Babies, Hinder, Candlebox, Buckcherry, Pop Evil, Rob Zombie, All That Remains, and Joan Jett.  Devour The Day has also played a number of festivals including  Rock on Range, Carolina Rebellion, Rocklahoma, and Welcome to Rockville.  Devour the Day is managed by David Cash of Fat Lady Music and represented for touring by Bryan Vastano of The Agency Group.
Devour The Day joins Razor & Tie at an exciting time in the label’s history as R&T finished 2014 as the #2 overall label at Rock Radio and the #1 indie label.  Led by breaking stars The Pretty Reckless, Starset, and established greats All That Remains and The Sword, Razor & Tie is becoming the leading label in rock.  Other recent signings include Wilson, Red Sun Rising, Crossfaith, Failure Anthem and Sons of Texas.

Secrets Review by Kelly Tucker

Secrets Review

Kelly Tucker

Rise Records hardcore giants SECRETS graced Greater Cincinnati for an unconventionally intimate night of breakdowns and melodies Saturday, April 18.

Hosted at Madison Live! in Covington, Kentucky, the scene was set in closer quarters with fans packing in tightly toward the stage, hoping to catch a glimpse of the headliners. SECRETS performed as the only national act on the set list. The members were gracious onstage, embracing the smaller venue and the house full of fans that came out to support them with open arms and explosive energy.

If you missed the show, here are our top takeaways from the performance:

#3. SECRETS are incredibly down to earth and dedicated.
The band just loves to perform, simple as that, and it was evident as they powered through crowd favorites like “Live Together, Die Alone” and “Ready for “Repair.” The band truly gave it their all, working through technical mishaps that had the two vocalists sharing a microphone at one point in the beginning of the set. SECRETS are clearly a do-whatever-it-takes kind of band. The lineup and venue set the stage for an intimate feel—something uncommon for bands from this genre, which typically tour with multiple national acts at a time—and the dire fans evidently enjoyed it. That said…

#2. Their fans are hardcore.
We don’t mean they may or may not beat you up in the parking lot out back afterwards. Ocean Grid might have gotten the pit going for the evening, but it barely stopped throughout SECRETS’ spirited set. Fans packed the venue shouting along to every word, waving their hands and shaking their fists like it was a spiritual experience. And hey, maybe for them, it was something like that. What’s clear is that SECRETS fans form a strong connection with the band’s sound and lyrics, and that connection has created a solid fan base that comes together in a powerful way. But SECRETS weren’t the only ones drawing super-fans to the stage that night.

#1. Cincinnati has some pretty impressive homegrown hardcore talent.
All three openers were local bands, hand-picked for their similar sound. It was a great opportunity for Cincinnati to showcase its own post-hardcore talent, with seasoned local vets at the helm. Allies Aside were incredibly animated with high energy, heavy base and heavier screams, while Seeing Ghosts emerged with a stirring melodic sound that can only be described as markedly both jaded and optimistic. Ocean Grid opened up the pit with heavy metalcore that prepped the crowd perfectly for the headliner.

Our only disappointment was that SECRETS’ “Ass Back Home” cover from Punk Goes Pop 5 didn’t make its way onto the set list. But SECRETS wrapped up the night the only way they could have—with an encore performance of “Dance of the Dead,” a writhing circle pit and an on-point delivery to satisfy a thoroughly enthralled audience.

Blessing A Curse go “Down The Rabbit Hole” in New Music Video

Orlando hard rock act Blessing A Curse has released a music video for their song “Down The Rabbit Hole”. The plot follows a murderous villain whose face is concealed by a creepy bunny mask and ends with quite a twist. The video originally premiered with Revolver.

Vocalist Joshy Singer said, “The song itself is about me rejoining Blessing a Curse after parting ways with the band for a year and struggling with depression after my dad passed away. The video symbolizes how sometimes you have to fight your toughest battles on your own in order to find the true friends who will stick by you through your darkest times, even in spite of the pain you’ve caused them.”
